October Stamp Show in Boston

本帖最后由 dowager1894 于 2015-8-13 10:46 编辑

There is a two-days' (Saturday and Sunday) stamp show in Boston.  Today I bought a cover dated Jul 12, 1919 from Shanghai to New York at USD$25 at the show.  Although there is no an
arrival postmark, I think it is a nice cover, but I am not sure whether I bought it at a good price.  It would be greatly appreciated if some one can make some comments about the cover.

I saw the letter in Interasia's catalogue . It is listed as #6913 under the HK and Treaty Ports catalogue. I'll inform my friend who had shown his interest before.

I saw Mr. Dillaway at the show.  He is a famous cover dealer in Boston area.  He told me he has sent his cover of 1880 envelope to St. Petersburg, Russia , to Interasia for the auction.  I have found the item on the November auction catalogue.  The estimation value is HK$50,000-60,000.  Have you seen it on the catalogue?

not from the  US Agency, letters from the vessel, but sending a parcel with whole of letters to US Head Office , and then opened the parcel there, sending out the letters demestically, that is why only pay local rate.

I remember there was a period of time that the people can send mail to America through US Shanghai Agency and just need to pay America local rate.
I remember the rate is 2 cent at that time. But I do not have any document/article in hands to support it.
Who has the detail information about that period and how much the rate is?

Agree.
This set of book is very useful as reader can see the whole cover and understand when/how the cancellation was applied on the cover.
But it is pretty expensive. About two years ago, I bought one set from CSS auction which cost me about $1000 dollars. I think it worth every penny I spent on it.

A set (10 volumes) of Paul Ke-Shing Chang's book"History of Postal cancellation of China" is a must for China's postal history philatelists as it listed thousands of early Chinese covers which we can study its cancellations, postal routes and rates. The set of books were published between 1989 to 1995 and are out of print now. Michael Rogers used to have the books for sale but may be sold out now. They can only be found in auctions.

Thanks for your comments from that I have learned something, although it is a little bit.
With your help my knowledge for China postal history is improving little by little.

The book about the postmarks of China Qing Dynasty that you sent me as a gift  two month ago is also very useful for me to study China postal history.  Thank you again.

It seems that 2 cents was the printed matter rate. Normally, there were no arrival chop for printed matter. Anyway, it is a nice printed matter item.
